Tesfu is a refugee from Eritrea. In 2007 he finally crossed the border with Israel and here he lives with his family till that day. He lives in south Tel Aviv in Neve Sha'anan neighborhood on Ein Hakore st, with his wife Haimanot and their three kids Ruth, David and Izza. He prays in the canter space in his apartment which functions as a living room and bedroom for the whole family (the hidden church). Also, he prays in the Eritrean Church in Levanda 18 which is a 5 minute walk from his house, and functions as a visible church for the Eritrean community.
The main experience we were exposed from the family is the disconnect between the parents, the adults, who speak the Tigrinya language, and the the Hebrew-speaking children who were born in Israel.
Levanda 18 is located in a typical block in south of Tel Aviv and includes six floors. The building contains vertical programs and each floor has a different use. It works as a mechanism that operates in a closed manner between floors and between the interior of the building and the outside.
We understood that the building doesn't allow communication between the floors and doesn't allow communication with the surrounding. Hence our main purpose was to create a communication system based on our principles, that allows communication between the adults and the children in the Eritrean community, and a communication between the Eritrean community and the Israeli people.
Finally, to help Tesfu and Haimanot find a common language with Ruth, David and Izza, and allow Israelis to recognize Tesfu's family as equals in the society.
